Published by Advent pioneer and lithographer Otis Nichols, the 1850 prophecy chart was prepared to help spread the message of present truth. James White explained that it was created “to supply those who travel and teach the present truth.”

The 1850 prophecy chart was published by Advent pioneer Otis Nichols after Ellen G. White received instruction that another chart was needed to help proclaim the message. She wrote, “God shewed me the necessity of getting out a chart. I saw it was needed and that the truth made plain upon tables would effect much and would cause souls to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (Letter 26, 1850)

James White wrote that it was "A chronological chart" “calculated to illustrate clearly the present truth” and that “those who teach the present truth will be greatly aided by it.” (The Present Truth, November 1850, 88.8).
